A Little History About a Steamboat in The Desert
Prior to 1900, the landscape at historic Steamboat Hot Springs south of Reno, Nevada looked a little different. There was a Grand Hotel, a hospital, a swinging nightlife, healing springs, and natural wonders. The third largest geyser in the country erupted regularly 60 feet into the air, fumaroles spewed steam continually, and boiling pools of hot water dotted the ground.
Enclosures built over the fumaroles offered steam rooms and hot baths. President Ulysses S. Grant stayed with his family, and Mark Twain wrote about his visits. Twain is reputed to have named it Steamboat because, seen from a distance, the column of steam was “like a steamboat in the desert.”
As early settlers came into the Truckee Meadows, they were directed to Steamboat by the Washoe people who considered the hot springs sacred for its healing properties. It was renowned in the entire western part of the country and even visited by native peoples from as far away as Mexico.
1925
In 1925, Steamboat caught the attention of a traveling doctor from Denver – Dr. Edna Carver. While stopped at Steamboat, she learned of the geothermal mineral springs. Convinced that if the hot water had been there, it was still there, Dr. Carver acquired the property. After drilling hit geothermal water just 18 feet down, Dr. Carver built Steamboat into a health destination that attracted visitors from around the world. When the first transcontinental highway was built in the 1930s, the Lincoln Highway went right by the front door of Steamboat Hot Springs.
Throughout its history, Steamboat Hot Springs has undergone various renovations and transformations, always striving to maintain the magic of its healing waters while adapting to the changing needs of its visitors. Steamboat Hot Springs is not historically significant for its physical structure but for the knowledge accumulated about the healing properties of its unique geothermal mineral waters that burst out of the Earth at over 220 degrees Fahrenheit.
Steamboat is blessed with one of the most highly mineralized waters in the world with exceptional healing properties.

Steamboat Hot Springs Healing Center & Spa is seeking a friendly, dependable, and service-oriented individual to join our team! This dual-role position supports both front desk operations and back-of-house (BOH) spa duties, playing an essential role in creating a calm, clean, and welcoming experience for every guest.
What You’ll Do:
Front Desk & Guest Services
✨ Greet guests warmly and create a welcoming first impression
✨ Check guests in and out, schedule appointments, and answer phones
✨ Assist with retail sales, gift certificates, and general guest inquiries
✨ Maintain a tidy, organized, and professional front desk area
✨ Communicate clearly with therapists and spa staff to ensure smooth daily operations
Spa Attendant & Back-of-House (BOH) Support
✨ Prepare spa areas before and after guest use
✨ Refill and refresh water cups, tea stations, and guest amenities
✨ Support general laundry duties including washing, folding, and restocking linens
✨ Assist with light cleaning throughout the facility (treatment rooms, bathrooms, common areas, staff areas)
✨ Restock towels, robes, supplies, and sanitation stations as needed
✨ Help maintain a peaceful, safe, and hygienic spa environment

Steamboat Hot Springs Healing Center & Spa is seeking a skilled, compassionate, and professional Licensed Massage Therapist to join our wellness-focused team. This role is ideal for a therapist who values exceptional client care, strong teamwork, and maintaining high spa standards in a healing environment.
What You’ll Do:
Client Care & Treatment
✨ Greet clients warmly and help create a calm, welcoming experience from start to finish
✨ Perform high-quality massage sessions tailored to each client’s needs
✨ Confidently provide a range of pressure levels, from light relaxation to deep therapeutic work
✨ Conduct brief intake conversations to understand client preferences, goals, and contraindications
✨ Educate clients on services, benefits, and post-treatment care as appropriate
Massage, Couples Treatments & Spa Services
✨ Provide customized massage therapy services in alignment with spa offerings
✨ Work collaboratively with another therapist to deliver seamless, synchronized couples massage treatments
✨ Communicate clearly with your treatment partner to ensure timing, pressure preferences, and treatment flow are aligned
✨ Maintain professionalism, awareness, and adaptability while sharing treatment space
✨ Willingness and ability to learn and perform additional spa treatments, including body scrubs, mud body wraps, and other specialty services
Professional Responsibilities & BOH Support
✨ Follow all spa protocols, safety guidelines, and sanitation standards
✨ Maintain strong time awareness to ensure sessions start and end on schedule
✨ Clean and reset treatment rooms thoroughly after each session
✨ Manage personal workspace, linens, and tools with care and professionalism
✨ Communicate effectively with front desk and spa team regarding scheduling and client needs
What We’re Looking For:
✨ Current Nevada Massage Therapy License
✨ Ability to perform various pressure levels and adapt techniques to individual clients
✨ Strong teamwork skills, especially in couples and dual-therapist services
